NASENI, Defence Ministry, DICON to establish Nigeria’s ammunition production factory

In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s defense capabilities and achieve autonomy in military hardware production, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) signed a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday. This groundbreaking agreement marks a critical milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its defense infrastructure through indigenous innovation and technological advancement.

During the MoU signing ceremony, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, highlighted the strategic importance of establishing a Military Industrial Complex (MIC). He emphasized that this initiative is not just strategic but a national imperative in the face of a rapidly evolving global security landscape.

Mr. Halilu stated, “Today, we embark on a transformative journey that will redefine Nigeria’s defense landscape and secure our nation’s future. This partnership with the Ministry of Defence highlights our dedication to leveraging Nigeria’s scientific and engineering expertise for national defense.”

With a strong background in research, development, and manufacturing, NASENI is set to play a crucial role in establishing the MIC. The new complex will serve as a central hub for developing, producing, and maintaining a range of military equipment, from small arms to advanced defense systems. This initiative aims to create a resilient ecosystem that meets the needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces, fosters local industry growth, and reduces dependence on foreign imports.

Mr. Halilu continued, “This MoU marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration focused on enhancing our defense capabilities through innovation and local production. Our objective is to equip our military with top-tier tools for national defense, and through this partnership, we will lay the groundwork for a self-reliant defense industry that also supports Nigeria’s economic growth.”

It is our duty to our nation, our Armed Forces, and future generations,” Mr. Halilu affirmed.

The historic agreement was witnessed by key stakeholders, including Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, Minister of Steel Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
